Q: What is a DMX-2-Emulator Protocol Converter? The DMX-2-Emulator Protocol Converter is a device that converts industry standard DMX signals (like those sent from DMX consoles) into the unique signals used by High End System's Emulator® laser simulator fixture. The microprocessor based protocol converter translates the operation of an Emulator fixture into a familiar set of parameters for use with a DMX console. Using this protocol converter, an entire show that incorporates Emulator fixtures with other equipment may be operated using a single console. Use of a single console allows for easily written cues that combine Emulator fixtures with other DMX fixtures. In addition, the powerful programming features of a console, including overlaying separate movement and color chases, can be more easily employed. Q: Why does one need a DMX-2-Emulator Protocol Converter? High End System's Emulator® fixture does not accept signals from industry standard DMX consoles. A special-purpose controller that uses its own native protocol is needed to operate these fixtures. Using the DMX-2-Emulator Protocol Converter, standard DMX consoles can be used to operate Emulator fixtures using familiar programming constructs like those used for other "intelligent moving lights". No special-purpose controller is needed. Q: Are all of the features available on High End System's LCD Controller available to my DMX console? Yes. Every construct and value available on High End System's LCD Controller is available through the DMX channels assigned to each Emulator fixture. Q: How many DMX channels does each Emulator require? 18. Q: How many Emulator fixtures can be run on a single DMX data link? 28. That's 512 dimmers divided by 18 channels per fixture (with 8 dimmers to spare). Q: Can other DMX fixtures be used on the same DMX data link. Yes. Any channels not being used for an Emulator fixture may be used for any other type of DMX fixture. Q: Can any type of DMX console be used with the DMX-2-Emulator Protocol Converter? Yes, any type of DMX console with at least 18 channels can be used. It is recommended that a console with support for "intelligent" or "moving" lights is used. Q: Can Emulator fixtures be remotely homed, shutdown and struck? Yes. The 18th channel is a "control" channel that operates similarly to other High End Systems products that accept DMX protocol. The following library files are for use with several consoles to define the channels and values used to operate High End System's Enulator® fixture with the DMX-2-Emulator Protocol Converter. If you plan to use the DMX-2-Emulator Protocol Converter with any of these consoles, we highly recommend that you download these files:
The current firmware version for DMX-2-Emulator is version 1.0.1. The current firmware may be downloaded from this site and programmed into a 27C128-120 EPROM, or by reprogramming the EPROM contained in the unit.
Note: Damage caused to a DMX-2-Emulator unit during a user upgrade is not eligible for warranty repair. |
